बी.सा.पु.सं. में आपका स्वागत है

प्रोफेसर बीरबल साहनी, एफआरएस, एक महान दूरदर्शी थे। उन्होंने वर्ष 1946 में ‘पुरावनस्पति विज्ञान’ को एक विज्ञान के रूप में स्थापित करने के लिए 'पुरावनस्पतिविज्ञान संस्थान' की स्थापना की, जिसमें पौधों के जीवन की उत्पत्ति एवं विकास, जीवाश्म ईंधन की खोज सहित अन्य भू-वैज्ञानिक मुद्दों को सुलझाने में संस्थान की क्षमता की परिकल्पना की।
शुरुआत में, संस्थान ने भूवैज्ञानिक समय अवधि के अंतर्गत पौधों के जीवाश्मों तथा उनसे संबंधित पहलुओं का अध्ययन करने पर बल दिया। हालांकि, संस्थान ने अपने अनुसंधान आयामों का दायरा बढ़ाया। वर्ष २०१५ में कार्यक्षेत्र को विस्तार देते हुए इसका नाम बदलकर (बीरबल साहनी इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ पेलियोसाइंसेज) कर दिया गया। जिसका मुख्य उद्देश्य एक पटल के तहत पुराविज्ञान को आगे बढ़ाने एवं देश की बढ़ती जरूरतों को पूरा करने के लिए प्रबलित रणनीतियों के साथ अधिक समग्र दृष्टिकोण को समायोजितकरना  है। वैश्विक परिवर्तन के बीच, नए व्यापक जनादेश का लक्ष्य है –

  • समय को आधार बनाते हुए जीवन की उत्पत्ति एवं विकास को समझना
  • वर्तमान एवं गहन भूवैज्ञानिक अवधि में जलवायु परिवर्तन को समझना
  • प्राचीन सभ्यता एवं मानव इतिहास को समझना
  • तेल एवं कोयला उद्योग के लिए अन्वेषण कार्यक्रमों में पुराविज्ञान का अनुप्रयोग
